The article analyzes the first Orthodox periodicals printed in the USA in Russian by adherents of Orthodoxy. The nost important prerequisites for the origin and formation of the Orthodox press in the United States were the development of Russian America, Christianization by Orthodox of the natives of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, mass emigration trom the Russian Empire in the late XIX and early XX centuries. The emergence of the Russian Diaspora in America was economic, political and religious. Most of the immigrants trom Russia, mostly labor migrants, who did not speak English, moreover, many were illiterate. But as cultural baggage. they moved their religion to the American continent - Christianity. Through the efforts of the Orthodox Church was created parishes, active missionary activity was conducted. There was a need for a printed organ that would support the pastoral word of Russian emigrants and satisfy their need for a special expression of their ow n, uniting Russian roots and American reality.
